If you teach pre-K, kindergarten, or first grade, you know how important retelling a story is.
Language, comprehension, story vocabulary….there are so many skills covered when students practice retelling!
One of our favorite ways to retell stories was acting it out, whether using pieces on a pocket or with popsicle stick puppets.
Both of these are always a lot of fun, BUT they take time to plan, make, and organize.
Sooooo, I revolutionized the “worksheet” into . . .
Story Sequence Pop-ups!

These are All-in-One sequencing pages where kids can:
- Cut out the story pieces
- Act out the story with the background
- Retell the story
- Glue to sequence the events
ALL ON ONE PAGE!
Having everything on one page helps by:
- Saving space
- Saving paper
- Less confusing- sometimes kids have difficulty managing more than one page
- Making it more fun! Kids can pop-up the background for a built-in “puppet theater.
Here’s how the Story Sequencing Pop-ups work
First, read the book. If you don’t have a hard copy, all of the books can be found on YouTube.
Next, use the story cards to retell the story on a pocket chart. Have your students chime in
with you for any dialogue, onomatopoeia, and movements!

Have kids come up to practice retelling.

Then, place the cards at a center for kids to use, along with a printable sequencing page. There are 3 versions in the bundle.
Version 1 is great for pre-kindergarten or early kindergarten. There’s no writing required and students simply use the pieces to retell the story on the background scene.

Version 2 is the ultimate interactive page! After cutting off the story pieces, students fold the page on the gray lines to pop up the scene!

Students will act out the story with the pieces, then glue them in order and write the ending. Students can point to the pictures to practice retelling the story over and over to their friends or families.
TIP: Some students will have a hard time folding. Designate a few helpers- kids who are good at folding the page- to help fold their friends’ pages.
Version 3: When you don’t want to deal with folding, or if you just prefer this format, this “flat” version is here for you. It’s the same as the pop-up version, just flat.

Think of all the rich language and comprehension skills your students will practice while being fully engaged!
